Beacon Hose Remembers Our Trip to Ground Zero on Sept. 12, 2001

Beacon Hose members gathered around the firehouse on Sept. 11, 2001, and watched in horror as the tragedies in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania played out on television.

Throughout the next week, our department responded to America’s darkest day in a number of ways. The video below illustrates some of the sights and memories of Beacon Hose’s relief mission to Ground Zero on Sept. 12, 2001, and an oral history of that entire week.

Sign Up For The 2nd Beacon-Holio Cornhole Tournament On Oct. 9

After a very successful first tournament last November, Beacon Hose bringing back the Beacon-Holio Cornhole Tournament!

The tournament is set for Sunday, Oct. 9 — Columbus Day weekend — at noon at Beacon Hose. (Registration and shootaround will begin at 11 a.m., followed by lunch.) It’ll be an all-afternoon affair (RAIN OR SHINE!) with big cash prizes on the line. The nuts and bolts of the tournament are below; click here for the rules, which will be the same as those used by the American Cornhole Organization.

Beacon Hose Fights Structure Fire on Beacon Valley Road

Beacon Hose responded overnight on Aug. 30 to a structure fire at 127 Beacon Valley Road. The vacant two-story home was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived around 3:30 a.m.

Chief Jim Trzaski ordered a defensive exterior attack and we extinguished the fire in about an hour. About 25 firefighters, including a mutual-aid ladder truck from Naugatuck, responded to the scene. Citizens’ Engine Co. No. 2 provided mutual-aid station coverage at our firehouse.

There were no injuries, and we had cleared the scene by 7 a.m. The fire was under an arson investigation.

Beacon Falls Voters Approve Funding for New Quint Apparatus

Beacon Hose is finally getting a new ladder truck!

Beacon Falls voters approved June 8 a five-part bond package, the largest item of which is $850,000 for a new quintuple combination pumper — known as a quint for short. The apparatus serves the dual purposes of an engine and a ladder truck, meaning it will have a pump, a water tank, fire hose, a 75-foot aerial ladder and ground ladders.

About $800,000 of the bond will go toward the new truck, which we’ve been designing for the better part of the last decade. We’re hoping to order the truck soon and have it in time for next year’s parade. The other $50,000 will go toward replacing much of the old equipment that is on Engine 1, which is the 27-year-old apparatus we’ll be replacing.

Beacon Hose Lobster Dinner Set for June 25

We know many of you enjoyed some fresh lobster at our carnival … and if that wasn’t enough, we can help satisfy your seafood (or land-based) appetite with our special annual summer dinner at the end of June.
