The Beacon Falls Emergency Operations Center held a meeting at noon Monday, March 13, at Beacon Hose to discuss preparations for the blizzard expected to strike Tuesday. Those present included First Selectman Chris Bielik; Beacon Hose Chief Jim Trzaski, Asst. Chief Brian DeGeorge, Capt. Howie Leeper, 1st Lt. It’s one of our favorite weeks of the year at Beacon Hose — Fire Prevention Week, when we get to share important fire prevention and safety tips with our community.
Make sure to join us Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 6-9 p.m. at the firehouse for our open house, when we’ll have hands-on demonstrations to teach some important fire prevention and safety tips! (More info at the bottom of this post.)
This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “hear the beep where you sleep.” What does this mean? We want to make sure our residents have installed smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of their homes, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms.

We at Beacon Hose hope you’re enjoying the holiday season. Hopefully you’ll visit us (or maybe you already have) to get a Christmas tree for your own home.
But whether you come down and get your tree from us, or if you cut your own, it’s worth sharing a few tips on how to make sure your tree is set up safely and that you dispose of it safely.
It’s pretty simple, really. Just make sure your tree isn’t too close to a heat source (a radiator or a fireplace that gets used often), blocking a main exit and using damaged lights. Make sure you get rid of the tree when it starts dropping needles, because dry trees are at major risk of catching fire.
Three times as many cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving than on an average day. Beacon Hose wants you to have a safe and healthy holiday!
Cooking is, and has long been, the leading cause of home structure fires and home fire injuries, and according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), home cooking fires peak on major U.S. holidays that traditionally include cooking such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Easter.
In 2011, Thanksgiving was the leading day for home cooking fires, with three times as many fires occurring on this holiday as any average day of the year. In 2011, there were 1,210 fires on Thanksgiving, a 183 percent increase over the daily average.
