Annual Beacon Falls RiverFest, Duck Race, 5K Set For May 14

Update: Thanks for your support!

As we continue to prepare for the upcoming Beacon Hose carnival from June 9-11, there’s one big event left on the agenda before then.

Yep, it’s the annual Beacon Falls RiverFest! In addition to the festival and duck race on May 14, this year there’s a new event attached to the goings-on. It’s the first Jill’s Race for MS, and it’s being run in memory of longtime Beacon Falls resident Jill Betkoski, who had multiple sclerosis and passed away 10 years ago.

The race starts at the Beacon Falls Recreation Complex at 10 a.m. and will loop downtown, through the hill section off Burton Road and finish near the firehouse. The race — which comes in the form of a 5k run, a 2-mile walk or a half-mile kids run — costs $25 for adults and $15 for children.

Impromptu BHC Training Video Goes Viral on Facebook

On Feb. 15, a few Beacon Hose members sat around the firehouse trying to figure out an idea for a quick training exercise. In just a few moments of tinkering, former lieutenants Cal Brennan and Paul DeGeorge whipped up a five-stage drill that ended up being the basis of a viral Facebook video.

This five-stage drill included a one-minute drill (gearing and packing up), following a hoseline, dragging a heavy dummy, taking 10 swings of a sledgehammer, and blindly navigating through an entrapment hazard.

Beacon Hose Extinguishes Dumpster Fire at Station-Glo

Beacon Hose responded Feb. 19 at 4:30 p.m. to Station-Glo on Noe Place and South Main Street for a dumpster fire.

Engine 3 was first on scene with a full crew and worked to open the dumpster to extinguish the fire. Engine 2 and Rescue 4 both joined the scene shortly afterwards.

The fire was contained to the dumpster, although there was some exposure to the structure. An investigation found smoke in the attic, but the structure was ventilated and there was no extension. The dumpster was overhauled and crews left the scene. A total of 17 members responded to the scene. The incident is under investigation.
